Learning Goals

  1. Demonstrate familiarity of the history of Native American communities and Indigenous practices of producing, preserving, and presenting the past.
  2. Apply these themes utilizing a variety of digital tools, programs, and software that can shape and critique our understanding of history.
  3. Demonstrate critical comprehension skills and digital literacy of primary sources, secondary sources, digital scholarship, and digital interfaces.
  4. Identify and communicate key approaches and ethical concerns that accompany working with different kinds of historical data.

Attendance Policy

I will take attendance at the beginning of each class. In the event that you are unable to attend class in person for whatever reason but you prefer not to miss class, please communicate with me and we will figure out a plan to allow you to join remotely or get you caught up. If you feel ill, think you may have been exposed to COVID-19 please stay home and send me an email so we can arrange for you to Zoom in or catch up on the materials as needed.

Masking Policy

You are encouraged, but not required to wear a mask in the classroom. This is a policy that will be subject to change throughout the term according to safety conditions. If you have concerns about this policy, please speak with me so that I can adapt a policy that respects your health and comfort.

Late Assignments

Life happens, I get it.
Generally, if you submit a blog post (the only weekly assignment for the course) within 24 hours after it is due (Sunday by 11:59pm CT), you can still receive the full 5 points. For each week that the assignment is late, I will deduct one point per week. If you experience circumstances that make it difficult for you to complete work on time, please talk to me so that we can make arrangements for you to make up missed work.

Recordings

Our class must be a safe space, one in which we struggle over difficult ideas and make ourselves vulnerable to having those ideas challenged. To encourage this environment, audio or video recordings of any kind are not permitted in the classroom without the expressed consent of the instructor.

Support for Success

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) offers holistic academic support services for all Knox College students. These services are free of charge and intended to assist students with virtually any aspect of their learning experience.

For drop-in tutoring and appointment scheduling, visit the CTL page or access CTL through my.knox.edu

Privacy

Your privacy and identity protection is a priority in this class. We will be engaging with online materials and programs that may require the creation of an account to use this service. When possible, I recommend “signing in with Google” to be able to use your secure Knox ID information. On certain platforms, like WordPress and Omeka, a username will be publicly displayed. The username will be the same as your Knox ID, but if you wish to use another username, please let me know of the change by email.

Please, never share your address, credit card information, Social Security Number, or any other personal information on a website that is unprotected or that you do not trust. You will not have to provide any of this information on the online services and programs we use in this class.

Accessibility and Inclusion

My top priority is to provide a safe and supportive space for you to learn.

Digital accessibility is the inclusive practice of removing barriers which prevent access to information and functionalities on websites. It is essential that we all work to provide equal access and opportunity for all users.

If you need an accommodation for a disability, please contact Stephanie Grimes (sgrimes@knox.edu) through the Office of Disability Services.  I will honor all recommendations made by the Office of Disability Services to support your learning experience in my classroom.

The Knox College Honor Code

Intellectual integrity is the underpinning for all educational, scholarly, and creative work at Knox College. The College community expects its members to demonstrate a high degree of ethical integrity in all their actions, including and especially academic work. At Knox each individual is held responsible for ensuring that his or her academic work meets the institutional standards of honesty.

Title IX, Mandatory Reporting, and Support Services

Discrimination, harassment, or sexual misconduct will not be tolerated.

All faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and research assistants are mandatory reporters. If I learn of a Title IX situation from you, I must inform Kim Schrader, our director of Title IX.  These reports do not open a case, but rather present the opportunity for you to communicate about the incident. It is your decision whether you wish to speak to anyone regarding an incident.

For more information on reporting options, confidential advocacy and support resources, university policies and procedures, or how to make a difference on campus, visit the Title IX website at www.knox.edu/title-ix-at-knox.

If you wish to speak to someone in a confidential setting, I encourage you to contact counseling services via email: counseling@knox.edu or phone: 309-341-7492. After hours, contact Campus Safety at 309-341-7979. If you are experiencing an emergency, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
